Southwick meeting. Hope everyone can attend
ATTENDEES: Meeting at Southwick Town Hall with Randal Brown, DPW Director, Dick Grannells, DPW Engineer, Dave Menty, DPW (who attended Sunday’s CLEP meeting), Jerry Crane Past President, CRC and Deb Herath, VP, CRC
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION: W. Suffield Sand Pit and possible effects on Southwick Water
MEETING NOTES: This area under the pit is a well head protection zone for both CT and MA. The DPW “thinks that they should have been notified of this possible re-opening of the pits” due to shared aquifer. As the water also migrates from south to north, other towns could be affected should the aquifer be breached or substances leak into it.
Randy Brown is going to check into whether or not a notification should have been made to Southwick from Suffield by contacting the MA DEP and also see what the MA Environmental Protection agency has to say about well testing, etc. when it crosses state borders, and if MA would require an Environmental Impact Study. It is possible that Suffield also overlooked new environmental regulations that have gone into effect since the last time the pit was worked, which must be taken into consideration. Randy will report his findings at the next DPW Water meeting July 17.
NOTE: The concern about the reopening of the sand/gravel pit and possible implications for Southwick water has been put as an agenda item for the next Southwick Water Meeting as a new business item. All interested parties are welcome, and encouraged, to attend.
ACTION ITEMS: Please advise your attorney of this information as well as the Southwick Water meeting, and have as many people attend the Meeting, July 17, 7pm, Southwick Town Hall. You may also wish to put this meeting on your web site to obtain more attendance.
